French Kiwi Juice

FKJ

Released: 2017

Runtime: 47:19 / 12 Tracks

Genre: Neo Soul, Jazz Pop, Nu Jazz

My Thoughts:

FKJ’s self-titled album is a relaxed and atmospheric listen. Narrative takes a back seat to sonic cohesion, but I still think that these songs are best enjoyed as an album. It may not be the most boundary breaking or experimental but I think that works to the albums advantage. I love jazz but it can easily become esoteric and stuffy. There is nothing wrong with challenging the listener but sometimes I just want an album that causes no friction. I think FKJ does an effective job distilling the elements I dig from jazz so they can be mixed with funk and electronic dance music. It’s inoffensive, laid back pop music that I couldn’t stop listening to when I first discovered it and keep coming back to. Just because something is accessible doesn’t mean it lacks merit. This is an album for rolling down the windows and driving somewhere slow or just recline somewhere cozy and turn off your brain. If you want a more engaging listening experience I highly recommend checking out the live performance linked at the bottom of this page.

About the Artist:

Vincent Fenton aka FKJ (French Kiwi Juice) is a French producer and self taught multi-instrumentalist. FKJ is one of the many “bedroom producers” finding breakout commercial success in recent years. Gone are the days of needing a record label to cover the costs of studio time. As such, it would be would incorrect to label “French Kiwi Juice” as his first studio album, but it is the first official commercial projected he has released. Preferring to work alone, this album as well as the rest of his discography is primarily written, recorded, mixed, mastered and performed live by Vincent alone. The Live Performances are made possible by live looping instruments one at a time. June Marieezy aka ((( O ))) is the only other credited artist for this album. Her vocals can be heard on Skyline and Vibin’ Out. She would eventually marry Vincent in 2019.
